Listen: Grave Pool – “Frost Pockets”

04 April 2014, 17:45 | Written by Rebecca Jayne Higgins

Nashville’s elusive and intriguing Grave Pool present jangle pop that seems perfectly made for hazy summer days.

The band have managed to do the unthinkable – remain almost absolutely untraceable on the internet. Aside from a few tracks forming an EP to be uploaded to bandcamp and a couple of two-line reviews floating around the far corners of the web, the only other indication of Grave Pool’s identity is a vague and slightly melodramatic soundcloud profile description which simply states: “I uploaded these songs during the last hour of my life before I turned 25 years old”.

If the anonymous mastermind behind Grave Pool felt a sense of crushing depression about hitting the halfway-to-30 mark, the curiously titled “Frost Pockets” does a stellar job of hiding it. If, however, it was a sense of apathy, the laid back tones and stoner-pop vibes that are the backbone to the song perfectly reflect the absent-minded indifference that 99% of us are plagued with in our early to mid 20s. A fan of the same fuzzy sounds that are favoured by fellow lo-fi enthusiasts Elvis Depressedly and Teen Suicide, the ethereal and reverberating melody of “Frost Pockets” intertwines with hazy vocals to create soaring jangle pop that encapsulates those perfect few years in which responsibilities and commitment are shunned in favour of just hanging around.

Despite the title, there’s nothing icy about “Frost Pockets” – in fact, rather the opposite. The solid, charming cymbal beat and dreamy vocals are like a cool, unexpected breeze on a sticky, uncomfortable day – a comforting and welcome distraction from the intricacies of the real world, even if it only lasts for three and a half blissful minutes.

The three-track release Dinosaur Hell, which also features a cover of Another Sunny Day’s “You Should All be Murdered”, is available on bandcamp now.
