Grapell reveal a wintertime treat with new song "Snowflakes"
It's not been long since Swedish duo Grapell gave the world their debut album Crier. Not long at all in fact: it only came out on 3 November.
But having released Crier's luxurious pop into the world, they're leaving their laurels unrested upon. In the spirit of the season, they've popped up with a new single called "Snowflakes". As you can probably deduce from that title, "Snowflakes" is a winter song, but manages to avoid the soggy cliche that a lot of that genre falls into.
It's warm and fragile, starting off delicately before swelling into a wave of emotion and memory. It's sentimental and powerful (any song that includes the line "you're the most beautiful thing I'll ever leave behind" will always be), but manages to be so without being off-putting or mawkish. It'll slot easily into your Christmas playlists, but you'll be able to tolerate listening to it in January too. We had a quick chat with the band about it.
It was only in early November that you released Crier, where did this single come from?
"It was actually written and recorded about a year ago. So it’s been lying on the shelf for a while… but now seemed like a good time to put it out – like a Christmas present for the world!"
What made you want to write a winter-themed song? And what songs do you associate with winter?
"The song was written just when the first snow fell, so… guess that’s where the winter theme came from. And also I’ve always liked the idea of writing a Christmas song. There are a bunch of songs that you associate with winter, like all the classical Christmas songs. Some of them give you a good feeling and some of them can really cause you anxiety attacks. But the best Christmas song ever is "River" by Joni Mitchell."
You’re going on tour this spring, tell us about that?
"Yes. We’re going on a little tour in Netherlands in the beginning of February. We did one concert in Amsterdam last year and now they want us to come back and visit some more venues around the country. We are stoked about that!"
