Swiping right gets soulful on Grady ft. Whethan's R&B-infused “Only One”
Like combining Khalid’s rich vocal tone with the bassy tessitura of George Ezra and a slight accentual twang, Grady’s unique vocals make even “non-committal” seem alluring. Although Grady describes the track as “the theme music to casual hookup culture”, the former Strangers You Know vocalist explains that the lyrics are personal and deeper than just a boast, recalling a time he surrounded himself with girls because he “just couldn’t stand being alone”.
Easing in with relaxed guitar chords and the audio crackle of vintage movies, “Only One” is distilled good vibes with Uber and avo-toast references. As he weaves romanticised phrases like “Sit and talk to her for hours / always been the boy and flowers” in between the pointed refrain “She not the only one, no”, the Santa Barbara native gives this classic romance a Tinder twist.
Following on from Spotify chart-topper “Garden”, which featured Cuco & MELVV, “Only One” is a brief but exciting glance at Grady’s upcoming releases for 2019. Embodying youthful freedom with a mellow R&B groove, it’s easy to imagine “Only One” continuing his chart trajectory.
