Gothic Tropic touches upon disco and funk in “Drunk On A Rhythm”
Cecilia Della Peruti - woman behind the moniker - makes a welcome return with Gothic Tropic’s comeback single “Drunk On A Rhythm”.
Surfacing for the first time since her 2017 debut album Fast or Feast, the indie pop trooper ends her sabbatical with a self-affirmative, toe-tapping ode that solidifies her joyful agency all whilst channelling the heated sonic fusion of her residual Los Angeles.
Capturing a lovelorn longing for romance, “Drunk On A Rhythm” carries the simple and pure essence of being carried away on the thrall of an infatuous new love. Emerging with a coercive bassline, whorls of synth and a smattering of psychedelia, the track segues seamlessly between nostalgic pop classic and contemporary indie anthem with a flurry of sax to boot. You can practically smell the hairspray and taste the dry ice.
“Lyrically, ‘Drunk on a Rhythm’ is about meeting someone new and being magnetised to see each other every other day / because your energies are undeniable,” says Peruti of her new single, however despite the blissful euphoria that courses through the pulse of the song, her latest release carries a more sombre undertone. “The song’s theme is on my most recent breakup. Releasing ‘Drunk on a Rhythm’ first is my way of being generous to myself; helping me heal from betrayal, accepting joy, and moving on."
Fittingly in the retrospect of 2017’s longform debut, Peruti’s comeback continues her affable tone all whilst partaking in the relatable quest for self-acceptance and celebration. “The overall meaning of the song nurtures my independent identity in all its truth,” she continues. “Putting this positive foot forward for summer feels appropriately indulgent.”
