Listen: Gorgon City feat. Laura Welsh – “Here For You”
In the past few years, we’ve seen a real shift in the world of house music. What was once confined to the underground, DJs and producers acting as the guardians of this very specific sound has recently broken out into the light of day and the playlists of Radio 1.
Of course, this ‘house’ is not the house of old Chicago, it’s more a chart-friendly blend of that house and your regular mainstream pop, a ‘half-way house’ if you will. It’s something the real house enthusiasts are not too pleased with but, really, the likes of Duke Dumont, Disclosure, and the Hot Creations lot are acting as gateways to that world of house, introducing it to a generation who increasingly find their music through the charts. It’s accessible without being reductive, still containing all the elements of fun that house was full of; acting as an updated alternative to disco.
Gorgon City are another group bringing that style to the mainstream and they’ve doing it with some style, working with wunderkind MNEK on their previous single and now enlisting the help of Laura Welsh, another up-and-comer that’s sure to go far with a voice like that. New single, “Here For You”, is exactly what we’ve come to expect from Gorgon City ever since their collaboration with Yasmin, where “Real” sent most dance radio DJs into a flutter. It’s a sun drenched banger with plenty of soul courtesy of Welsh’s gorgeous vocals, which floats through like a cool, refreshing breeze on a scorching hot day.
Like Duke Dumont’s recent “I Got U”, it’s the kind of track that whisks you away from the grey April sky to a world where the sky is painted as dazzlingly blue as the sea and where the beaches are warm and clean, completely devoid of the dirty nappies of Blackpool. What with the first weekend of Coachella coming to a close and the second weekend just about ready to kick up again, it’s the perfect antidote to not being there – all the California sun and good vibes without any of the sunburn or expensive drinks.
