Stream Lulin, the new LP and film project from Swedish duo Gidge

Following the release of debut album Autumn Bells the Swedish electronic act Gidge are releasing a new record and accompanying short film this month.

Lulin is a two-track piece inspired by the landscapes and forests of Umeå, surrounding the home of Gidge's Ludvig Stolterman and Jonathan Nilsson. The duo explain: "The idea behind the Lulin project started six years ago with a noise on the roof and subtle creaking in the walls. It was an autumn night, and Ludvig was currently living alone in the old bakers cabin on his mother’s farm. The strange noises frightened him, but he was all alone and simply had to deal with it. If you see or hear something that is unexplainable, and you have no one there to share it with – what do you do? This slowly grew into an idea, and a mystical being called Lulin."

The project consists of 42 minutes of audio and a 24-minute film made in conjunction with film production company Lampray and arts platform Norr, filmed closer to where Gidge recorded their debut album in Umeå and is directed by Stolterman.

Part one of the musical side of Lulin is "Hon", part two is "Byn"; there are a number of distinct sections to this incredible, epic composition beginning with the crackle of field recordings and snatches of birdsong, ambient piano and pitch-bent voices which hint at the potential horrors, real or imagined, awaiting someone living alone in an isolated cabin.

It's quite the exercise in tension-building, leading to the haunting female singing and eerie woodwind around the eleven-minute mark before the more recognisable glissando which Gidge is known for takes over, accompanied by some rustic percussive beats. The piece ends on organ and snatches of song in Swedish, hinting at a calm settling over the forest...yet the troublesome night noises - taking human form by harnessing the power of the overactive imagination - are never too far away. The chorus of voices continues through "Byn" before the record concludes in gentle, almost distracted piano playing from a byegone age. A nod to history and a goodnight lullaby

Lulin is out March 18 through Atomnation and Gidge play London's Corsica Studios on 23 April. The film will be available to buy and download online, and you can listen to an exclusive stream of the album below.
