Infused with a shining ebullience, gentle confidence and – more importantly – endless promise, the new track from Washington DC’s GEMS is four minutes and eight seconds of the most robust music we’ve heard this summer.
‘Sinking Stone’ has the kind of guitar sweeps and bass-driven/heart-in-mouth percussion that reveals an incredible grasp of musical empathy at work. It’s crafted rather than simply written and produced, with the band’s evolving debt to soulful eighties pop becoming ever more complex and fascinating.
The band are currently on tour in the US:
20 July - Philadelphia – Johnny Brenda’s (with Indians)
22 July – Washington, DC – Black Cat Backstage (with Indians)
24 July – Allston, MA – Great Scott (with Indians)
25 July – New York, NY – Pianos
