Fuzz-driven indie melodrama permeates Oh Joy’s “So Swell”
With all the hallmarks of gloomy Midwest emo angst, Irish three-piece Oh Joy combine the pinning lyricisms of The Promise Ring with the anthemic chorus of Frightened Rabbit.
Heralding from Dublin, Oh Joy is a fresh-faced group pairing honest story-telling with delicate melodies and moody dissonance. “So Swell”, the thundering introduction to the band, is a brilliant example of balancing sincere songwriting with an intelligent dynamic range, something sorely lacking in young guitar bands today.
