Frøkedal weaves a mischievous tale on latest single "Treehouse"
Foreshadowing the release of her highly anticipated second album How We Made It, "Treehouse" evokes anecdotal nostalgia amidst its more delicate leanings.
“'Treehouse' was inspired by a six year old kid who tore his older brother’s treehouse to pieces without knowing he was being watched,” explains Anne Lise Frøkedal of the tale that spurred her lyrics. "Even if it seems meaningless and silly, the joyful mischief of it feels strangely familiar."
A more delicate and whimsical nature belies the track’s petty sentiment, layers of delicate plucking lighting a bittersweet spark in its disarmingly breezy and carefree surface. By all means, to the subjects of Frøkedal’s story, this is war. “This idea – or this way of behaving – kind of translates to everyone at some point,” she continues. “Sometimes it just feels better to tear stuff up. Or maybe, tearing stuff down for others feels better than building up your own. You’re doing something and you know you’re gonna get in trouble for it but it’s better somehow – you just want to be part of the game.”
Following hot on the heels of the defiant "I Don’t Care", "Treehouse" offers a different side to the Norwegian singer-songwriter, twisting her grounded and bold rock tones into affable folk. Undeniably more composed, Frøkedal’s most recent offerings signify her maturing as an artist and vocalist, a trajectory that only serves to mirror that of her current lyrical subject matter.
"When I started writing this new material, I was picturing different ages or stages in our lives when our vision gets a little blurred," she says. "I wanted the songs (and the characters) to channel these critical moments when decisions are dominated by emotion and not necessarily by logic."
