Francis ache - but with a sparkle - on new single "Wild Heart"
Francis have long been experts in indie-rock with an emotional punch. The five-piece, based out of the small city of Falun in central Sweden, cemented their reputation for achingly pretty melancholy on their 2016 album Marathon.
Since then, they've been a little bit more relaxed and less heavy in their output. The standalone singles since that record, "Swing" and "All I Want", were beautifully constructed, chirpy tracks that traded in some of Marathon's weight for higher tempos and energy. And their new single, "Wild Heart", continues in that vein. The guitars sparkle and dance across the new song, and the clattering drums give it a choppy, breezy rhythm.
It's still achingly pretty and melancholic, but more in a more front-foot and upbeat manner, more likely to have you singing along than thinking back to lost memories on a rainy Tuesday two and a half years ago. Or maybe both, why not? Petra Mases of the band says: "'Wild Heart' has been somewhat hated within the band, which is not an uncommon thing really. But somehow we haven't been able to let go off it completely either. That's kind of what the song is about too".
