flowerkid explores the murky depths of childhood experience on "i met the devil at 4 years old"

Pairing personal experiences with universally pleasing sonics, flowerkid bares his vulnerability on "i met the devil at 4 years old" - the latest single to be taken from his debut EP, out today.

Emerging from Sydney, singer-songwriter flowerkid (aka Flynn Jorge Sant) released his debut single when he was just 16 years old. At the core of his music is a confessional and poignant narrative that vaults Flowerkid into an unmissable presence.

Flynn fell into music upon being gifted a second-hand Yamaha keyboard. Its appearance revealed with it a talent for self-teaching; penning tracks and working up his productions while tucked away in his teen bedroom.

His debut single “Late Night Therapy”, by title, is exactly that. “I really didn’t know that I was capable of expressing my thoughts in that way. It was all very new to me and I thought, ‘This is perfect, it feels so good to be able to do this.”

Soon, Flynn leaned into songwriting as a cathartic escape all the while coming to realise that he was trans, against the grain of his Catholic school and a first-time breakup. He later realised that he wasn’t alone – with each track welcoming a new cohort of like-minded followers who sought refuge in his vulnerable musicality.

Now 20 years old, he is uncompromising. Nosediving into topics of gender dysphoria, mental health, and misogyny, flowerkid prides himself on expression beyond traditional constraints.

Earlier this year, Flynn shared the lead single from his today released debut EP, everyone has a breaking point. While wittingly titled “vodka orange juice”, the lead single builds upon all that we’ve learned about Flowerkid to this point – his adoration for piano, his experiences as a transgender teen, and his heart-wrenching honesty.

“It was hugely cathartic writing this song,” he shares. “I hope when other people are listening, they feel the same way. If you feel like you aren’t accepted for who you are, please know that you are loved.”

"i met the devil at 4 years old" is the latest single to be taken from the project and it presents Flynn at his creative apex. Loud, playful, and drowned in reverb, the track feels emblematic of the moods and textures that he aspires to capture.

His glitched vocal sounds transplanted from the quasi-SoundCloud rap made popular by the likes of The 1975’s more recent catalogue, while the production is constantly shifting. Layered and chopped into moments of euphoria and chaos, “i met the devil” subverts norms. As sirens whirr, Flynn exposes his childhood traumas to turn “hurt into healing.”

Speaking further about the debut EP, he shares “[It’s] been everything I have thought about for a very long time. This body of work is a feeling that has been bottled up inside me for all of my existence on this earth.”

“I want us to lose ourselves hand in hand,” Flynn continues, “on this ethereal and spiritual musical journey I created for us. Please listen and watch as my internal and external struggles flourish into bloom. I can’t wait for you to hear this excerpt of my heart and soul.”
