So far, this Florrie ‘come back’ is going pretty well. While it hasn’t really reached the dizzying highs of her Experiments EP, which is a perfectly crafted selection of incredible pop tunes, it’s still great to have Florrie back and injecting her brand of fun and originality back into the poposphere.
Her last single, “Seashells”, was a refreshingly different and brilliant trip into the more left-field side of pop; sounding more like an Omar Souleyman dance smash than Girls Aloud. Her latest single, “Free Falling”, sees Florrie going back to what she’s known for. There’s a little bit of weirdness here and there but it’s still a lot closer to the old Florrie aesthetic than “Seashells” was.
“Free Falling” is basically just a massive pop song. Synths bubble under the surface before occasionally jumping up with an icy stab at the keys whilst the beat struts along with the assuredness of a world-class supermodel dominating the catwalk. The verse is the definite earworm here, which goes all meta with Florrie singing “Here I am I sing the verse/sing the verse/sing the verse”. It’s big, it’s confident, and it’s got what sounds like a chicken clucking away throughout. What’s not to love?
Couple that with the fact that the video has the shiniest sunglasses I have ever seen and looks like a tour through a beautiful collaboration catalogue between ASOS and Ikea, and you’ve got yourself a shiny, sexy, self-assured pop song that is only getting me more excited for what this debut album could bring. If these songs on her Sirens EP (out April 27) are what she’s putting out to keep us occupied until the release, imagine how good the songs are going to be on that…
