FIG skates the line between DIY bedroom pop and slick synth cool on new single “The Rink”
On her sixth single of the year, the prolific NY-based artist FIG injects some shimmering sass into her lo-fi but fully addictive RnB fused new bop, "The Rink".
Originally from Malaysia and with very little written about her online, FIG is something of a prodigious pop phenomenon who claims to like corn, takes pride in constructing her jams without the need for a fancy studio, and creates music that hits your head and your heart with a powerful charm.
Of this year’s output, some are aching, echoing slices of emotion-soaked, sparse RnB (see the Spotify supported "Don’t Watch Me Cry"), whilst some have a retro '90s lilt, and others root themselves in the leagues of sad ballad indie belters ("Have More Fun Without Me").
However, newest effort "The Rink" has a crisp and playful side that draws on romantic nostalgia and comes at the perfect time of year; right when you’re ready to slip on some skates and try not to take out someone’s child on the mottled festive ice.
"Just a bowl of Cheerios will do me just fine, jump into the backseat let’s go skating tonight" FIG assures over a computer-game pulse of synth and glitch. If anything could make you feel wistful at winter it’s this blend of simple, unadulterated hope. "Let’s go to the rink, glide and slide. Let’s go to the rink, smoother than ice" she continues with a coolness to match the track’s title. Take me to Winter Wonderland immediately.
