FEMME is completely unstoppable. She fronts Nigel Godrich’s wonderful multimedia project, Ultraísta, pairs up with producer Crewdson for the sample-based duo Eckoclick, and on top of all that releases her own music. No wonder she’s been nominated for as the hardest-working independent musician in the industry; she’s a machine of ideas, driven by her daring passion for music.
“High” is yet another example of her unfathomable ability to make disparate elements work as a whole. Beats comprised of cut ‘n’ paste vocals jitter beneath robotic synths, as soulful harmonies and syncopated rhythms nod to her noted affection for afrobeat.
It’s pop music for people wanting a little bit more than the genre’s oft-criticised superficiality. Alt. pop, avant pop - call it what you like, but FEMME is a continually exciting, challenging and remarkable talent.
Available on 6 October, “High” precedes FEMME’s long-awaiting debut album, set for a spring 2015 release.
