FANS have been compared repeatedly to The Strokes and it’s easy to see why; whoever is performing the vocal duties could certainly be mistaken for Julian Casablancas (albeit, perhaps on Quaaludes). The trio’s debut single, “All This Time”, employs some of the same garage rock themes that got everyone excited back in 2001.
Unlike their musical cousins in New York, however, who used fuzz and reverb to effectively give a garage feel to tunes that were otherwise melodically precise and carefully orchestrated, FANS absolutely revel in the noise. Each instrument does its part to construct the wall of sound: drums pound away on a snare-heavy beat, the bass never loses its sixteenth note pace, and the rhythm guitar strums without abandon right up to the beginning of a massive chorus. By the time everything winds down, you’ll be yearning for more.
“All This Time” is released on 28 April. FANS play Live at Leeds Festival 3 May.
