Fanny Andersen has no time for your BS on terrific new single "Not A Toy"
Following up her debut single "Kids" could have been a hard act, but Norwegian superstar-in-waiting Fanny Andersen has made it look so easy on her stormer of a new single.
On "Not A Toy", produced with Kito, Andersen continues her honesty-first approach to her music; having spoken frankly to Best Fit about her sexuality, this time the target of the Norwegian's sharp tongue are the endless wastemen in her way.
Replacing the pop of "Kids" with influences drawing from dancehall, R&B and the Charlie XCX school of songwriting, "Not A Toy" moves from a skeletal beat in the verse to a no-nonsense, colourful banger by the chorus. Andersen stomps all over copies of The Game as she sings “Rule number one / If he plays dumb / He’s a player / Rule number two / When he got another you / He’s a player", proving that after only two singles she's ready to take on the world.
We could talk all day about musical styles, beats and whatever synth noises you like but what really stands out in Fanny Andersen's music is the attitude. It's not fuck-you because it's not standoffish, but the singer has a way of getting right to the heart of the matter without compromising her artistic vision. It's rare we find ourselves with someone who is endlessly honest in their music and not afraid to show it, and having followed Andersen since we fell in love with "Kids" we've been lucky to hear more than a handful of songs by someone who's never happier than when in the studio writing - there's so much more to come.
Fanny Andersen is going to be huge. We told you back then, and we're telling you again.
