Eyesore & The Jinx continue their post-Brexit punk tirade with “On An Island”

31 January 2019, 16:39 | Written by Ben Lynch

“On An Island” is the second politically-driven sardonic single from Liverpool post-punks Eyesore & The Jinx.

You can go some way to understanding the sound and ethos behind Eyesore & The Jinx from the company they keep, having spent time with Fat White Family’s Nathan Saoudi and recorded tracks with Daniel Fox from Girl Band. On their debut single, “Gated Community”, the band attacked the enforcers of arbitrary borders in post-Brexit Britain. “On An Island” continues in the same mindset, with additional commentary on features such as social media to draw a more disconcerting image of isolationism.

Drawing on the eccentric post-punk aesthetic of Parquet Courts most heavily, this increasingly worrying perspective is matched by a more abrasive musical approach. The jarring of the shouted “On an island!” chorus is emphasised by cleaner verses, the band employing a drastic change in dynamic to add ridicule to the realisation that the UK is, indeed, just an island.

Combining a deep-set anger with an overriding sense of disbelief, Eyesore & The Jinx have again captured the two primary emotions felt by many over the last two and a half years. Not bad for a band with just over 12 months on their own clock.

The band describes the track as a "sweet and tender ballad dedicated to the cultural residue of post-Brexit Britain. Where endorsers of teeth whitener, protein shakes and 2 for 1 cocktails are as influential as the reptiles in Westminster".

“On An Island” is out now via Eggy Records. Find Eyesore & The Jinx on Facebook.
