Evening Hymns reveal the shimmering stomp of “All My Life I Have Been Running”, sign to Tin Angel
Ontario’s Evening Hymns have signed to Tin Angel for the UK/European (except France) release of Quiet Energies, the follow up to the critically acclaimed Spectral Dusk, on 16 October.
While Spectral Dusk was a moving tribute to his late father, the touring of the record began to take an emotional toll: “The goal of all those shows was to serve those songs and make them real. It was never fun.”
Recorded following his move from Toronto to the Ontario countryside, Evening Hymns' mainman Jonas Bonnetta joined forces with Andrew Kekewich (drums) and Jon Hynes (bass) of The Wooden Sky, as well as an extended cast of players including regular collaborators Sylvie Smith, Gavin Gardener and Mika Posen, amongst others. The album title is a product of the move, and his long held longing to be somewhere rural, slower and quieter, Bonnetta explains: “Quiet Energies is the concept that all of this pent-up energy could be stored inside these quiet moments – a whisper that could be as effective as an explosion.”
One of the side effects of rural life is spending a lot of time travelling and Bonnetta goes on to explain that as the record came together it became evident that it was a driving record. “I was in L.A. and drove out to Joshua Tree to spend the day wandering around and shooting Super-8 film. I had been listening to so much Tom Petty on that trip, and it kind of came to me that this record was a journey. A road trip album. A driving album.”
Big choruses, crunching guitars, soaring strings and a shimmering Spector stomp lend a real sense of urgency to “All My Life I Have Been Running”, the first track to be taken from the album, premiered here. Expansive, strident and determined, it serves as a perfect introduction to Bonnetta’s often not too quiet Quiet Energies.
