Evalyn is back with the gluttonous bombast of "Creme de la Creme"
Referencing the ravenous deadly sin, the track is the latest to be shared from the Californian artist’s new EP Salvation, itself a wide-eyed examination of modern cult worship and what it means to be sinful in the present day.
Mixing an M83-esque synth refrain with bassy, buzzsaw guitar is quite the juxtaposition, but makes perfect sense in the context of Evalyn’s recent output including the dark, lucid pop of "A Pill to Crush" and the whimsical yet anthemic desire of "Big Bad City". Despite the tainted, hedonistic nature of Evalyn’s lyrics, the tone is bittersweet, channelling a breezy euphoria at the intent of living life zealously.
“'Creme de la Creme'is about the sin of gluttony and draws heavily on my admiration and love for all things Los Angeles and being extra. It's about bad habits and acknowledging that sometimes you're flawed and ridiculous and too much, but maybe it all just comes down to wanting something different, something more from our lives,” says Evalyn of her latest outing. “It's a feeling that has been so real for me, this fear of growing up, settling in and going through the motions.
“I just kept singing that phrase "I don't wanna go through the motions" over and over while having coffee one morning and when I brought it to Nicopop that afternoon he turned to me with this look of like ‘Wow, yes, that's how I feel’. Friends would pop in while we were working and say the same thing, so in this one I think we were just trying to express this great anxiety that all of us wild wanderers had been feeling."
