Listen: Eugene Quell - "That One Song" [Premiere]

10 June 2014, 11:45 | Written by Charlotte Krol

Brighton-based “no-fi indie antihero” Eugene Quell announces his second EP, A Great Uselessness, with the premiere of “That One Song”. With the track’s unexpected urgency, we can wave goodbye - at least for the moment - to the pleasant lethargy of previous cuts.

“That One Song” is full of the guitar fuzz that gets you pumped for a new day, brightened by Quell’s oddly compelling monochronous vocal and pummelling drums. Truly enriching and exciting stuff.

Speaking of the track, Quell said: “The song’s about a band from Iowa called Ten Grand. They have been a big influence on my writing since I first heard them back in 2004. They seemed to burst with pure soul and expression, often at the expense of their music, and I’m all for that. Their singer/guitarist, Matt Davis passed away in 2003 just as things seemed to start kicking off for them, he was only 26. So fucking tragic. While searching around online I found quotes and stories which revealed Matt to be an exceptionally lovely person. I used these quotes, liner notes from their records and some of my own thoughts in writing the lyrics for this song.”

Quell plays his first London headline show at The Old Blue on 3 July (free show) as well as at 2000 Trees Festival (10 - 12 July). He also supports Speedy Ortiz at The Prince Albert, Brighton on 14 August.

Pre-order his second EP, A Great Uselessness, now before its release on 7 July via Sonic Anhedonic Recording Company.
