Elsa Carmona (fka Sirena) reveals darkly gothic electro debut "Ritual"
Once a Best Fit favourite under the name Sirena, the Stockholm/Barcelona-based singer Elsa Carmona is back under her own name and with a new, darker sound.
The first single under her own name, "Ritual", finds Carmona - writing alongside Fredrik Okazaki (Robyn, Seinabo Sey) - in bleak R&B territory occupied by the likes of BANKS. There's a vivid sensuality at play, highlighted by Carmona's breathy delivery, balanced with lyrics hinting at self-destructive nights attained through pills and booze.
Of returning to her own name, the singer explains "I used 'Sirena' to explore a radio-friendly, dream-pop aesthetic.. My taste has changed since then, and the music I'm making now is darker and rawer than what I was into before. It just feels right to use my real name for this”. The choice feels right,; this darker turn suits Carmona's personality and voice, and it feels like it's re-ignited something in the artist.
