Ebo Taylor has had one of the most extraordinary careers of any musician I can think of.
Throughout the third quarter of the twentieth century he was at the vanguard of the Afrobeat movement, leading two of Ghana’s greatest bands, and writing truly timeless music. Perhaps more extraordinary, though, is the fact that he is still recording – and that the quality of his latest work is so high. Last year’s Love & Death was more vital, more invigorating than most records released during 2010 by musicians 50 years his junior. The title track might well be my favourite song of the year.
Now, Taylor has collaborated with Strut to compile a retrospective of his unique career. Life Stories is out now as a highly recommended two-disc collection. Check out ‘Peace On Earth’ below.
