Ease continue to compel with new single "Unbreak My Bones"
It was back in winter that we first heard from Stockholm duo Ease and it felt appropriate. The four tracks on their debut EP Latest Aches, including "Adrenaline", were songs very firmly set in the night time, so it only made sense that they emerged in the darkest part of the year.
Now the band (Niclas Lindgren and Siri Jennefelt) are back with a brand new single. "Unbreak My Bones" picks up where Ease left off on the EP, pairing that classic old-school synth sound with melodies sharp enough to stick inside your head.
This is powerful music, those driving synths helping to hit the heavy emotions that sit just beneath the surface. Ease juxtapose the weight of those synths with the light and melody in Jennefelt's vocal to make a song that exists on the thin line between fun and fear, between sweet and sinister, between attraction and something darker. It's a song that's unsettling, but deeply compelling, the kind of song that Ease do so well. Listen and check out a Q and A with Lindgren and Jennefelt below.
Ok, so tell us about "Unbreak My Bones". Talk us through the single and how it came together.
Siri: "Unbreak My Bones" came together in the fall. I made a dramatic synth intro and a bassline and showed it to Niclas one rainy day. We sat down and tried to make something with it but got stuck. I went home, and one hour later Niclas called me and said "you have to get over here" and then he played me the finished song. "Unbreak My Bones" is about submission, to let go and give in for something strong.
Is this a stand-alone single, or are you working towards a new EP/album?
Siri: The song is one of four songs that we're releasing as an EP in September called Let It Burn, Let It Die.
You put out your debut EP in January, and here you are already back with new music. Are you generally a band that works pretty quickly?
Niclas: I don't know, I guess it depends how much passion we have for this project, but right now we're into it.
After this one comes out, what have you planned for the next few months?
Niclas: This summer we play in Rome and Naples in Italy, and at Gagnef festival in Sweden. Then we release the new EP in September. We're looking forward to the release party!
