Dora Jar's impressive debut single "Did I Get It Wrong" is laced with existential anxiety
It's the question that wakes you up in the middle of the night when you remember something you did a decade ago. "Did I Get It Wrong" is the exciting first release from alternative newcomer Dora Jar.
Born in New York and raised in California singer/songwriter Dora Jar is ready to bare all as she sets out on this new journey. At first glance, it's an unconventional introduction to her world, but by questioning herself on track one we do learn a lot about this intriguing artist and what she stands for.
Following the passing of her sister, Dora was determined to sing, dance and make the most of her health. While her sister Lueza was unable to walk or talk, the pair communicated almost telepathically, connecting through movies and music and long wheelchair trips around town.
At the age of four, she pushed her sister's wheelchair out on the stage at a benefit concert for The Bridge School, a special educational establishment set up by Peggy and Neil Young, and it was this very moment that sparked something in Dora.
Pushing forward with this debut release, her inspirations all seem to meet on this brooding track. Drawing on the fighting spirit of Gwen Stefani's punk years, hip hop masterminds Outkast and the vocal elasticity of Regina Spektor, "Did I Get It Wrong" is an atmospheric anthem willing you to take forgo your doubts and dive-in headfirst.
"It's funny that my first release is me questioning myself," Dora Jar says. "I guess my intention is to purge all my worry from the start. If ignoring it means being ignorant then I want to face shit head-on, and know myself."
