2015 is shaping up to be a watershed year for soulful torch songstress Doe Paoro.
Relocating from her native New York to Los Angeles, where she feels there is “a pulse to the music happening out [there]”, Paoro has signed to the fine Anti- label for her debut LP to be released later this year.
Paoro has just come off her first Anti-single, “Hypotheticals”, which was recently featured on HBO’s Girls and has now treated us to a wonderfully austere session performance of the upcoming debut’s lead track, “Traveling”.
Paring back her customary cocktail of noir-shaded elements of synthpop and dub down to a minimalist backing akin to the xx, the performance underscores Paoro’s magnetic soulful vocals and presence, which are down to her interest in Tibetan vocal arts.
Indeed, Paoro views music – specifically pop music – as a path to transcendence and discovery:
“[Pop music] can make you think about things you hadn’t considered before, perhaps awakening a part of yourself that you hadn’t been paying attention to.”
