Watch: D/C – “Devil On My Shoulder” [Premiere]
Classically-trained urban soulster, D/C, has released the new video for “Devil on my Shoulder”, taken from his debut EP. It’s a modern day ballad for the inner-city, blending perfectly sparse, intricate beats with soaring strings and affecting, bluesy vocals.
-An impressive first effort from the London-based crooner, “Devil on my Shoulder” drifts into being with some beautifully melancholic violin work, providing the backdrop to simplistic rhythms from bass and drum sections. Mesmerising synths and minimalist guitar motifs add depth, and evoke obvious comparisons to James Blake and King Krule. But the real attraction here is D/C’s wonderfully intimate husky vocal, which slips and slides in between the song’s instrumentation, lamenting the state of society and its cruel confines.
The video is awash with philosophical image reflections and lonely saunters through inner-city scapes and nightclubs: a smart accompaniment to his lyrical keening.
D/C’s 5-track debut EP Epiphany is released digitally on 31 March. He’s also just been announced to play Brighton’s The Great Escape festival (9 – 10 May).
