Daya is wide-eyed and ready to start something new as she returns with "First Time"
Daya's strand of pop is highly self-aware and matches the urgency of her recent efforts to motivate her fanbase in the upcoming US election.
It's been four years since the singer/songwriter released her debut album Sit Still, Look Pretty. Even back then Daya was prepared to go against the grain and write songs which spoke not only to her own personal experience but resonated with her growing fanbase.
Aside from "Don't Let Me Down", her GRAMMY-winning collaboration with The Chainsmokers, singles like "Hide Away" and the album's title track were seemingly inescapable thanks to their effortless success in creating unforgettable earworm melodies.
Since then Daya has teased new material with a string of singles including last year's "Insomnia" co-written by Allie X and Troye Sivan collaborator Oscar Görres. Her new single, "First Time", sees Daya team up with Swedish writer SHY Martin and production duo Jack&Coke.
“A natural result of being more in touch with myself and the world around me, knowing exactly what I want and how to get there," Daya explains the track "feels like a rebirth of self – sonically and visually – and it’s a small piece of an entire world I’m building with my new partnership with J Kash at Sandlot Records and AWAL.”
Embracing her own queerness has helped Daya to be more candid and outspoken in her efforts to educate and engage her audiences on social media. Especially around the forthcoming US election – she has been a vocal force for many of her followers who are set to vote for the first time.
With her long-awaited second full-length releasing beginning to take shape, Daya is set to open up even more so as she continues to pair her vulnerable lyrics with the electro-pop sounds her career has evolved around. Stay tuned as Daya still has more stories to tell.
