Listen: David Douglas - "Higher" (feat. Lenka) [UK Premiere]
Dutch producer David Douglas returns (with an assist from CHEATERS’ Lenka) with a new take on his most popular track “Higher”, premiering in the UK today on Best Fit.
It’s easy to dismiss remixes, alternate takes, acoustic versions and the like as bait for overenthusiastic fans and completionist collectors - a cheap avenue to keeping an artist’s name in the press between album and touring cycles. It would be easy to do the same with this latest version of “Higher”, in which Douglas barely tinkers with the warbly underwater synths and busy mid-tempo beat of the original.
Think of this as something more like a second draft, then. The detuned, incomprehensible vocals of the original that seemed destined to melt into the synths have been struck through with red ink. In their place, Lenka brings charming (and comparatively chipper) pop-ready melodies to the proceedings, subtly transforming the track in the process.
