Dutch electronic duo CUT_ announce their debut album with cathartic single “Not Addicted To You”
Keeping the momentum going after the release of their Blind=Bliss EP back in March, Sebastiaan Dutilh and Belle Doron are now gearing up to release their debut album, unveiling their most personal and autobiographical track to date.
"Not Addicted To You" opens with a pounding beat amidst cold guitar lines that stomp forward, laying the groundwork for Doron’s moody vocals and intimate lyrics. The synths shimmer and swell throughout, whilst the track’s production boundlessly strives forward, symbolically capturing the song’s message that speaks of running away from a ruinous relationship.
The catchy chorus indeed mirrors the romantic unease that is at play, but nonetheless leaves one questioning whether Doron is just trying to convince herself that she isn’t actually addicted to the toxic relationship she finds herself in, or, if she'll find the strength to stay away. The duality of these emotions is backed by Dutilh’s locomotive beats that perfectly contrast with the vulnerable, yet empowering character of Doron’s lyrics.
When writing the new album, the Dutch duo escaped the hectic city life to let it all sink in, as has become the custom for the pair. “Not Addicted To You” reflects their preference to escape as it is one of the most introspective efforts CUT_ have ever released. By tapping into the psychological depths of failed love affairs, Doron provides emotional support that she hopes will resonate on a personal level with the listener.
Speaking on the making of the track, she added "Until now I've always wanted to refrain from autobiographical stories, but I felt it was ready to show the world a different side to us. I went through a rough time, as we all do sometimes. Naturally the most intimate thoughts came out forming the core of the songs. It felt great to have such an outlet. I've always been touched when people come up to me and tell me that my music and words helped them. It's one of the reasons I need to make music. By showing this vulnerable side I hope I can support people emotionally and show them they're not alone."
The single is accompanied by stunning Arno Stols-directed visuals that feature mesmerising landscapes and vintage cars that only heighten the anticipation surrounding their upcoming new body of work.
