Listen: Cosmo Sheldrake – “Solar”
The problem with sporting a name such as Cosmo Sheldrake is that casual listeners predictably expect something fiercely unique. Thankfully, in “Solar”, the B-side to the elaborate, “The Moss”, Sheldrake delivers barminess by the bucket load, as well as a deliriously glitchy soundscape to entice your hips.
The obvious attraction with Sheldrake is that he splices his tracks with a plethora of globetrotting influences (and beyond), “Solar” boasting the haunting chants of Central African Aka Pygmies, Ecuadorian flutes and foreboding recordings of the sun, lending the song its ambitious title. Amongst these gorgeous layers, his affinity for poetry is also apparent, with William Blake’s ‘I Rose Up At The Dawn Of Day’ woven around frenzied percussion and woozy samples.
With a fistful of promising tracks under his belt, the astounding scope of what Cosmo Sheldrake could produce is tantalising. For now, let us savour “Solar” and the rest until his potential is fully realised.
“The Moss”/”Solar” is released on 21 April.
