Copy Haho announce self-titled debut, listen to 'Dying Breed'
We first started shouting about Stonehaven’s Copy Haho back in December 2008 when the band announced their debut EP Bred For Skills and Magic – it was on said EP that lived a song that still holds up as one of the most exhilarating cock and balls out (and I hate to use the term) ‘anthems’ these ears have had the pleasure of wrapping themselves round in the past five or so years. ‘Pulling Push Ups’ was a master-stroke in intelligent swaggering indie-rock without falling into a (The) Wombats sized hole.
So what happened? Well, not a lot actually. A 7″ single via Too Pure followed around autumn 2009 alongside heaps of high profile tour supports and, apart from countless self-deprecating prose from their twitter account, Copy Haho sadly fell into the *what could have been* pile.
But hark(!), today we bring you the ridiculously exciting news that the band have finally announced details of their debut album. A self-titled affair, the record will be released on June 20 via Slow Learner – a label set up by Haho’s bass player Richard Scott. Recorded just outside Glasgow at Chemikal Underground’s Chem19 studios (Life Without Buildings, Arab Strap, The Delgados, Mogwai) and was produced by Jamie Savage (The Phantom Band, James Yorkston). No surprise then, that upon first listen the album pulls no punches. The 18 month absence has sharpened up their songwriting chops somewhat and, with any luck, could see the quartet break their way into the – frankly depressing – boys-in-a-band-with-guitars scene that was all but destroyed by laptop baiting hipsters last year but *saved* by erm…. Brother. Yeah.
Above all though, it’s just bloody nice to have them back. They produce the kind of indie pop that feels like a warm hug from your girlfriend who you later find has just been sleeping with your best mate. They’ll twist the knife when you’re least expecting it: which ultimately, makes it all the more thrilling.
