Comte De St Germain's "Down To The Wire" is lucid alt-rock at its best
Comte De St Germain is the alter-ego of Brisbane-born Joseph Johns - an ex-guitar tech and bassplayer for Deadcuts - and his debut track “Down to the Wire” is a strong statement of intent that re-assembles the DNA of alt-rock into something catchy and forward-sounding.
The song features the likes of The Vaccines’ Arni Arnasson on bass duties and was cut in a studio housed inside a former East London Victorian biscuit factory.
"I had terrible stage fright as a kid, but ironically working as a guitar tech really cured that for me," explains Johns, "because when you’re getting up in front of massive crowds at arenas or festivals or what not, and it’s not your band, and it’s not about you, you suddenly stop caring."
Johns went back to Australia to write before returning to London earlier this year to begin recording. We're promised a second track in January with the first Comte De St Germain shows the following month and he's also been collaborating with ex-Fat Whites bassist Joseph Pancucci-Simpson on his new project.
