Listen: Colour of Spring - "Honey"/"Skin" [Premiere]
Yorkshire quartet Colour of Spring return with double A-side “Honey”/”Skin”, premiering exclusively on Best Fit.
Both tracks were recorded at the Suburban Home Studio with a production assist from MJ (Hookworms), and that influence shines through on this darker departure from debut single “Next Year”. From the onset of “Honey”, guitars wail and feed back over a bass line that sounds ripped straight out of a 90’s alternative staple, finally crashing and settling on an indelible lead, almost as if by accident. This serves as the hook in an otherwise wild wanderer of a song, which builds to a thrilling crescendo featuring furious drumming and dual guitars that seem determined to start a fire and burn it all down.
“Skin” rises from the ashes as the lighter, looser counterpoint. The guitars are still effects-heavy, of course—a note from the band’s Soundcloud profile: “Distortion on”—but the leads here mostly glimmer and glisten, even as they push against the melody with near-“black notes”. Alongside “Honey”, “Skin” helps to further the foursome’s case as an exciting young band with a style all their own.
The band says: "We wanted this new release to be a benchmark for things to come, a little darker, a little heavier compared to our poppier début single Next Year. These songs are much more representative of our overall sound and MJ definitely helped get this across in the studio in capturing the sound and the feeling we were going for.
'Honey' is about a struggle in rationalizing an addiction to something, wanting it but knowing you don't need it. The lyrics are made to feel synonymous with the music. 'Skin' is basically built on the imagery of sex and the naked body. Both songs are quite personal and intimate while also open to suggestion."
The single will be available via digital download and cassette courtesy of Plastic Fish Records. Check the band’s website for upcoming gigs.
