Clean Cut Kid release another infectious number in the shape of "Runaway"
With "Vitamin C" Clean Cut Kid set out their stall. Impeccably catchy, instantly smile-inducing, the band's debut effort in June begs to be returned to and has all the elements of a sunny anthem for daytime airwaves.
A b-side in the shape of "Twenty Years From Now" revealed a softer, more ballad-esque side to the Liverpool quartet, made up of husband and wife Mike and Evelyn Halls, Saul Godman and Ross Higginson. But this latest cut is a return to what they seem to do best: straight-up, rousing indie pop/rock.
Like their initial release, "Runaway" adopts a foot-stomping rhythm from the outset, bolstered by fist-pumping "Ay!"s and another rambunctious and royally infectious chorus: "And you'll never runaway, runaway / everything you know will be yours by now", Halls cries with typical urgency.
Describing the inspiration for ‘Runaway’, Mike writes: "I wrote 'Runaway' about an hour after I'd spent the last tenner, of the last installment, of my final year student loan. It’s a song about feeling beaten before you've even started the race, and that moment when you realise that there are just some things you'll never escape.”
With the people of Polydor behind them and a recent London support with label-bud Shura on top of these impressive early outings, Clean Cut Kid are seemingly on a collision course with the mainstream. Gentle similarities with the likes of Vampire Weekend, later Kings Of Leon and The Magic Numbers mean there's no reason why we shouldn't be hearing a lot more from the talented four in the near future.
