Listen: CHVRCHES – The Mother We Share (Kowton's Feeling Fragile Version)
Reworking CHVRCHES’ hit single ‘The Mother We Share,’ bass producer Kowton strips away the Scottish band’s blissful pop vocals and synths to inject the tune with the exact nostalgia CHVRCHES may have intended from the start.
Joe Kowton works the counter at Bristol record store, Idle Hands, and has often been labelled, one-to-watch. The latter piece of information seems less of a discovery and more of a fact, especially judging by this mellow, yet skittering remix.
Not too often can a producer completely rework a track to the point where we forget it’s actually a remix, but Kowton manages to do just that. Removing lead singer Lauren Mayberry’s vocals entirely, Kowton experiments with different forms of alternating percussion over a dreamy, hypnotic backdrop. His ‘Feeling Fragile Version’ of ‘The Mother We Share’ could be offered as a pensive standalone, a truly impressive one at that.
CHVRCHES’ album The Bones of What You Believe will be released on 23 September in the UK and 24 September in North America.
