CHOZE makes a bold statement of intent with experimental grime banger "Badderz"
London has always been the belly of the beast when it comes to pushing the boundaries of genre. South-West rapper CHOZE is latest contender to the throne with “Badderz”, a track with razor-sharp wit and old-school instinct.
“The following story contains strong language that listeners may find compelling”, the public service announcement warns. It’s an intro – both literally, and metaphorically – into the concrete jungle where CHOZE was raised as a musician. “Badderz” bears all the hallmarks of the ‘old-skool’ era of grime that shaped his sound, harking back to the days of the pirate radio stations Déjà Vu and Delight FM, where CHOZE – along with kingpins Dizzee Rascal and Stormzy – cut their teeth.
The beat is dynamic, offset with flecks of golden, RnB-inspired melodicism. Producer SKOLZ has an ear for elevation, though, and takes it one step further by punctuating “Badderz’ with AI-voice samples, giving the track a tang of humour among what would otherwise be a raw hip-hop soundscape. It’s just the a taster of his upcoming debut album, D.I.Y.
“It’s my introduction to the modern-day world,” CHOZE explains about what inspired the track. “We’re living in a new era where sound and innovation has taken a whole new approach. I wanted to show that I’m walking into a new time, embracing the art of this generation.” Not only is CHOZE riding a new wave – he’s part of the current driving it forward.
