Chelou releases Maya Jane Coles-produced “Halfway To Nowhere”
After headlining Warehouse Project, Maya Jane Coles found herself listening to a handful of Dictaphone demos from an unsigned artist.
Chelou had recorded the bones of “Halfway To Nowhere” whilst lost in Colombia, accompanying himself on a battered guitar with more than one missing string. As luck would have it, Coles saw merit in his work and invited him to record in her home studio, taking on production duties herself.
“I think the M1 at 5am was a perfect setting,” Chelou says, of the luck behind their unlikely collaboration. “”Halfway To Nowhere” was the first song we worked on together and is simply us finding our balance between a guitar driven folk song with electronic production.”
“At the time I wrote this track I felt I hadn’t been creative for some time. I did my best to escape to somewhere looking for inspiration, but truthfully the song is based on the frustration I had with my cycle of life at the time. The realisation of this track’s potential came from Maya’s production - she picked the recording from a bunch of demos - I remember her laughing because there was a load of interference from my Nokia 3310 mobile all over the recording.”
