Charlotte Carpenter unveils "Babywoman", a stomping promise to the women who've fought for freedom
Northampton-born rocksmith Charlotte Carpenter unshackles exhilirating new number "Babywoman" ahead of a busy few months of touring.
The solid-gold stomper is bustling with chugging chords, wiry Americana licks, and beats that rekindle memories of The White Stripes' "Hardest Button To Button". Beyond the rhythms and melodies Carpenter has conjured up a tale of female strength - a tribute and a promise to the women who have suffered and fought in days gone by.
"'Babywoman' started a year ago, at a time when I was feeling tired and defeated," Carpenter explains. "Dedicating your life to music comes with its sacrifices and I was beginning to feel miles behind other women my age. Some friends would have a baby or buy a house within a year and I didn’t feel writing a few good songs was the same milestone."
"My state of mind took a turn when I started to think less of myself and more of the women before my time," Carpenter adds. "If the women before this generation fought so hard for the freedom I have today, then I should continue to fight to withhold it and never take it for granted. I should care less of what is expected of my gender and more time onto the career that I have the freedom to create. 'Babywoman' has become my empowering anthem and I really hope other women feel that too."
Carpenter kicks off a self-booked European tour later this month, opens for Bryde and Alessi's Ark in April/May, and headlines London's Sebright Arms and Birmingham's Sunflower Lounge in June. Find out the full live plans and ticket details.
