Listen: Chapelier Fou - "Tea Tea Tea"
Here's a grand mixture of bitcrushed arpeggios, wonky unsettling synth chords and slightly narcotic flurries of sliding strings, courtesy of French musicmaker Chapelier Fou (that means "Mad Hatter", by the way).
It's called "Tea Tea Tea" and it's a cross between maniacal French house, experimental classical sounds and a quirky film score – quite a unique vibe. And the video, a mash-up of crypto-art aesthetics and the Japanese tea ceremony, a cross of physical paint and digital symbols (the classic sand timer, for instance), is a great reflection of this mix.
The man behind the moniker is multi-instrumentalist and former teacher, Louis Warynski. Turns out he's a pretty busy guy, having created music installations for schools (check out his cute and educational "Végétophone") and soundtracks in the past (e.g. this advert for Google Web Labs); this year he's provided the music an exhibition at the Baribcan entitled Les Metamorphoses de Mr Kalia, created a film score, and is releasing an album, Deltas, in November, from which the brilliant "Tea Tea Tea" is taken. The single drops via of French label Ici d'ailleurs.
Pre-order Deltas here should you wish to descend into Chapelier Fou's colourful and creative world.
