
BRIT School grad Caswell doesn't play fair on electro-soul single "Animal"
British singer-songwriter Caswell shows soulful flair and a warm electronic familiarity on new single "Animal".
Having attended the BRIT school in her teens, 22-year-old singer-songwriter Caswell grew up in Tulse Hill, South London, surrounded by musical family members. Citing Kate Bush, Nina Simone and Björk as just some of her many influences, these rich songwriting histories have a guiding effect on her own music.
"I draw from my own personal experiences," Caswell explains of her own songwriting process. "I find that's when I really need to write. It's very much a form of catharsis for me and I like having created something positive like a song out of something negative that has happened in my life. Sometimes it helps me find closure and listening back to songs is like seeing the little milestones of my life."
The new single follows "Fury", her debut, which was released last year, offering a similarly soulful window into Caswell's world. "Animal" packs more of a punch, with its greater lyrical depth unapologetically exploring themes of instinct.
