Carmody shares "Before You Knew Me" and announces debut headline show
Bursting the bubble of fairytale romance and young love, Carmody releases candid new single "Before You Knew Me".
"Before You Knew Me" is an honest exploration of the decline of a relationship. As the London-based singer-songwriter explains, “I list my faults, but still ask the person to stay”.
At almost five minutes long the new track adds another layer to her downbeat R&B catalogue, with Carmody at her most intimate yet. The instrumental may be peaceful and sublime - drawing on both electronic and jazz influences - but it's her tortured vocal, used sparingly, that really breathes life into this forlorn mid-tempo love-lost song.
"Strip away the layers of ourselves until there is no-one else to be / and I'm there caught between reality and fantasy / but I'm still asking you how to love me," she sings. Despite the time they've spent together it's these words which perfectly isolate what Carmody is trying to illustrate. In her own words the song is inspired by “the moment in a relationship when the loved up bubble starts to pop.”
See Carmody share her heartache live on stage at her recently announced debut headline show at The Waiting Room, Stoke Newington on March 27th, tickets available here.
