“I Heard A Cry” confirms the hype around London trio Calva Louise
Winning widespread acclaim and airplay for their debut single “Outrageous”, Calva Louise clearly aren’t a band hanging around. On their second single, “I Heard A Cry”, they prove what all the fuss is about.
The trio of Jess Allanic (vocals, guitar), Alizon Taho (bass, backing vocals) and Ben Parker (drums, backing vocals) has already managed to bag support slots for Albert Hammond Jr and Spring King among others, and their scuzzy garage rock sits comfortably alongside such contemporaries.
Whereas the punk influence on “Outrageous” was there for all to hear, “I Heard A Cry” has more obvious pop sensibilities. Take away the fuzz and we’ve got a short, sharp singalong. Allanic’s vocals in particular emit an energy that’s dangerously infectious, culminating in a high-octane two minutes of music.
Providing some background to the track, Calva Louise explain: “'I Heard A Cry' deals with the misinformation we often feel regarding what’s happening elsewhere in the world. But at the same time, it’s about the will of many people who are trying to inform themselves”.
