C.Macleod's "Dream" is the sound of cosmic America via the wilds of the Hebrides
The Isle of Lewis isn't the first place you'd think of looking for widescreen USA roadtrip music, but local boy C.Macleod might be about to change that with his debut single "Dream".
Discovered by producer Ethan Johns on a tour of the Highlands back in 2013, the pair have worked together on a series of songs which will make up Macleod's debut album next year.
The first taste of what's to come is "Dream"; slowly unfurling over five minutes, with a rock solid backbeat recalling The War On Drugs at their most languid the song feels expansive and searching. Given Macleod's upbringing away from the big city it's no surprise that images of wide open spaces - be it the neverending horizon of a US road trip or the endless seascapes and mountains of the Scottish highlands and islands - are brought to mind by the singer's tremulous vocal and free-spirited strums.
With a melody borrowed from an old Gaelic song, C.Macleod has repurposed the past for a 21st century audience. This is folk music initially designed for a small community, transformed into a piece of music which yearns for bigger spaces and unbounded dreams.
