Broen discuss their new video: "We need to love ourselves to enjoy life"
Norwegian five-piece Broen recently released “<3”, their first single for Bella Union, and now they've unveiled a video for the track.
The eclectic five-piece kindly talked us through the clip, which is a one-take live version of the song.
"While in the studio and playing around with recording new material, we invited our friend Sigurd to come film us perform a live version of '❤️'. The studio is called Forsgren/Engfelt and is where we have recorded our new album, and probably where we'll record the next one too. There is plenty of space in that studio, which makes it feel like the perfect working environment, we can take breaks in between and just lie on the floor, arrange the music or re-write lyrics whenever we feel like it, which gives us a great, great sense of freedom. Anyway, we called Sigurd and had him come by. We have worked with him in the past, and we really like how he captures the energy of our music both while filming and in the way he edits the footage. We did everything in one take, both the song and the filming. The sound was recorded by the great Marcus Forsgren (who recorded our album).
The blue filter in the video was chosen to match the colours of the cover-art made by Heida (who plays tuba in the band) and Lasse Marhaug.
'<3'is an inner dialogue. It is a conversation happening between two different parts of the self, the anxious, afraid and troubled part, and the part that needs to live life to the fullest and feel free, without anxiety, fear or baggage. 'When will you cease to dismiss the imperfection of existence, and instead make a bed that you can lie in? As easy as breathing. All the seconds spent on dwelling, instead of being, you crush your head into the ceiling.'
In a way it is similar to how someone would write to an ex- or present partner because, aren´t we our closest partner? We need to love ourselves to enjoy life, and we need to embrace all parts of the self and not dwell on the past."
