Brodka's bewitching pop track "Santa Muerte" looks at death's upsides

This song follows the majestic single "Horses", the first taste of her English-language debut Clashes.

"Santa Muerte" is a beguiling, witchy Cowboy ballad with galloping drums, '70s pop hallmarks, and a sense of feral danger. It's twisted and synth-addled, drifting towards Southern Gothic territory, but Brodka's golden vocals ensure that it never lingers long in the macabre.

Speaking about the song, which is inspired by a trip to Mexico, Brodka says: “I was really surprised by how people treat death there. Young kids from a very early age are taught not to see it as something depressing, but something that tells you about the next life, and not really in a sad way. The song is like a conversation with death but treating it as a conversation with a friend. We have this relationship with death all of our lives”.

The track, like the rest of the LP, was recorded between L.A. and her native Poland with Noah Georgsson (Joanna Newsom, Cate Le Bon, Devendra Banhart).

Clashes is released 13 May via Play It Again Sam.
