Bristol post-punks Idles ensnare our hearts with their "Romantic Gestures"
Bristol post-punks Idles are on the warpath with stone-hearted jam "Romantic Gestures", a rallying cry against "bullshit romanticism".
It's the second video/track from the band's upcoming EP MEAT, which also features lead single "The Idles Chant" which we debuted as Song Of The Day earlier this month.
The blurb on YouTube reads: "It's about being a lazy lover and pretending to give a shit about the bullshit in bullshit relationships. We hope you "enjoy" the video, now fuck off... only joking. We'd rather you came and saw us live then fuck off and tell others how you "enjoyed" our live show."
Going into slightly more detail with CRACK, frontman Joe Talbot elaborates: “The song was written at a time when I was really disillusioned by relationships. Mainly with women, but also with friends and family – I’m just calling out the bullshit in romanticism; there’s a whole world of people getting confused between love and being terrified of dying alone. Fuck that.” Continuing, Talbot explains that the vid is about "that dank shitty corner of the heart that reeks of jealousy and would eat their lover alive in order to keep them."
With serrated riffs and raw percussion, the instrumentation gives the impression of vicious post-punk blitzes, but Talbot's delivery is clear and airy. The chorus leans towards squalling shoegaze and pop-flecked rock, and the band ensure that their vibrant, accessible streak remains - they're furious, but they're gonna rant through a smile.
The MEAT EP is out on 30 October. They're playing Bristol's Louisiana tonight, and London's Old Blue Last on 28 October.
