Vampire Weekend's Brian Robert Jones shares his take on NSYNC classic "Bye Bye Bye"
Ahead of an entire covers album of the boyband's second full-length record No Strings Attached, multi-instrumentalist and pop sorcerer Brian Robert Jones unleashes his rework of the group's hit single.
A familiar face to fans of Vampire Weekend, Jones has been touring with the band since 2018 where he gets to showcase his virtuosic guitar skills live around the world every night. Having also spent time touring with MUNA and Gwen Stefani, Jones makes up one half of indie-pop duo Human Natural who released their debut album Only Human Natural earlier this year.
For his latest project, he's taken to reworking one of his favourite albums of all time, with a little help from some of his friends. Alongside his solo covers, thanks to the record's artwork we know we can expect to hear the voices of Lou Roy, Ren Farren, Starchild, Human Natural's very own Hannah Winkler, Jesse Gold and Whisperfish to work their magic across No Strings Attached tracks like "It's Gonna Be Me" and "Space Cowboy", originally a collaboration with TLC's Left Eye.
It's hard to believe the original NSYNC album was released 20 years ago, especially when listening to Jones' cover of "Bye Bye Bye". Bringing the essential early '00s track into the '20s gone are the strings and Jones adds vocoder, synths and additional riffs transforming this classic into something new. Drawing on influences from across the decades the magic in Jones' reimagining of "Bye Bye Bye" is the timeless space he creates.
