Boy Willows teams up with Dylan Minnette to craft a mesmeric, alt-pop dream in “Fila”
Based in Los Angeles by way of Maryland, Boy Willows releases hypnotic new single “Fila” featuring Wallows frontman Dylan Minnette.
Following on from his 2018 debut EP Woods at Night and second outing oof, Boy Willows follows his summer single “I Love It When You Talk” and continues to make waves with his entrancing new cut “Fila”. Known for his unique style, “Fila” acts as the perfect introductory track to enigmatic new talent Landon Fleischman.
With authenticity in its abundance, Fleischman invites listeners into his world through a tinted lens. Working with subtle acoustics and fuzzy soundscapes, the production on “Fila” has a hazy, lo-fi quality; it feels spacious and delicate at its core while retaining a playful charm thanks to effervescent, whirring sonics.
Teaming up with Dylan Minnette, “Fila” proves the pair to be the perfect duo as they opt for raw, pared-back harmonies that weave throughout the track and ground the production. Lyrically loaded, “Fila” is filled with introspection as each artist reflects in their verses; acting as a call and response, Fleischman sets the tone with retrospective lyricism followed by Minnette’s verse proving to be the perfect answer, while still managing to carve his own identity into the single.
“Dylan and I were talking to each other about what feelings bubbled up when we were forced to slow down for the first time in a long time,” Fleischman explains of “Fila”. "I wanted the song to be dream-like. The first lyrics are ‘follow me down’ because it’s meant to take the listener down a rabbit hole of what’s going on in my head.
"When I was making the instrumental, I was picturing everything in slow motion, super delicate and airy, giving space for Dylan and I to share some intimate stuff,” he continues. "We got to collaborate on this song and heal by singing about it together. Looking at the song now, it’s cool to hear our verses almost converse with each other. It’s comforting.”
“Landon first played me the song when we were sharing a tour bus together. It was only about 30 seconds long at the time and I immediately was so inspired by it and I told him I thought he should extend it because it’s so great,” Minnette adds. "He asked me if I wanted to throw on a verse myself and my little warm heart exploded.
"The melodies I wanted came to me immediately. I also wanted them to pretty much mimic what he was already singing on his part already too with some of it. I’m so proud of the final result.”
