Australian party outfit Bootleg Rascal release eclectic double A-side “Yin & Yang”
“Yin & Yang” features two new tracks from feel-good twosome Bootleg Rascal: the hip-hop leaning “Get Over Myself” and the indie-dub based “Tryin’ To Run”.
The double-single was named “Yin & Yang” as it embodies the range of styles that Bootleg Rascal band is capable of, as singer Carlos Lara explains: “We’ve always drawn inspiration from a diverse array of sounds. 'Yin & Yang' couldn’t be any closer to the sentiment, hence the title. We had a lot of fun shining a light on our more urban influences on ‘Get Over Myself’, while on ‘Tryin’ To Run’ we leant more towards our classic feel-good party sound”.
“Get Over Myself” sees the band take on a hip-hop guise, featuring a blend of R&B harmonies and rap incorporating into the indie elements of the band’s sound. While working on the song, the band took inspiration from the likes of iconic duo OutKast and more contemporary R&B artists like The Weeknd. Speaking about their intentions for the song, Lara said: “We really wanted to do something different, explore incorporating different aspects of music that we really love listening to, like hip-hop and soul. It’s also just a hell fun song."
Meanwhile, “Tryin’ To Run” offers a feel-good party atmosphere, combining playful funk with rap and vocal hooks. Guitarist Jimmy Young is particularly prominent on the track, which plays up to the indie-dub sound that the band is known for. As Young explains, “We just wanted to create a bit of a Cake-esque jam; something you can have some fun with. I think this is a pretty classic style Bootleg jam. Some groove driven dirty riffs with a sing-a-long ending”.
The band handled much of the production themselves for both tracks, with assistance from long-time collaborator Ian Pritchett (Boo Seeka, Kim Churchill, Angus and Julia Stone), and Simon Dobson (Little May).
