Blue House share gorgeous '90s-esque indie-pop debut "Hot Air Balloons"
James Howard and Ursula Russell, formerly of bands Fiction and Drop Out Venus, have come together for Blue House.
We're told they're partial to paying little attention to what's going on in the world, musically speaking that is. Maybe this is why "Hot Air Balloons" is full of '90s nostalgia.
Be it the chiming open-tuned acoustics that scream of Parachutes-era Coldplay or the beautiful nonchalance of the Ian Brown-like vocal hums, "Hot Air Balloons" rings in a decade past like it happened yesterday.
Speaking about the track, Howard says: "'Hot Air Balloons' is a song that pretty much wrote itself. To me, it’s about the sort of split second in which you feel you could explode into any number of different lives or narratives. But it doesn’t really matter what I think. I may or may not have been hallucinating at the time.”
As the first taste of their forthcoming debut album it's difficult to tell if "Hot Air Balloons" is Blue House's sound moving forward. But we sure as hell enjoy its simplicity and resonating charm.
"Hot Air Balloons" is released on 11 December via Vaguely Pagan Records. The duo play White Heat at the Lexington on Friday 20 November with Big Deal and Lazy Day.
